Issue 16

"After this we went to the waterfall. By Rio" Rio's invented spellings are evidence of today's lesson: Writers listen for all the sounds in the words to create spellings. They don't worry about getting it perfect the first time. Kids need to approximate spellings to construct their understandings of letter-sound correspondences. Conventional spellings come with practice, focused lessons, and reading in many genres!

Issue 14

Last Friday, Eli's grandad Marcos came to read us Dr. Seuss and Maurice Sendak. And he brought pizza too! We really enjoyed it, especially the stories of Eli and Marcos' ocean adventures.

Julianna draws and writes in chalk on the flagstone.

Bruno and Eli read, all cozy by the woodstove. We've enjoyed the cold this week, both inside and out!
